Willis Hare Tigers Don't Play with Fire!
Firefighter Bobby Bridgers shares tips on fire safety.
Recently members of the Conway and Severn Volunteer Fire Departments joined forces to share lifesaving lessons about fire safety with the Willis Hare Elementary School Tigers. The theme was “Learn Not to Burn”. Bobby Bridgers, Public Information Spokesman for both Conway and Severn, captivated the students while sharing tips on fire safety. Bridgers, a third generation volunteer fireman, encouraged students to observe the “Kids Safe Zone”, at least 3 feet away from ranges or anything that gets hot, like a wood stove, portable heater or fireplace. Willis Hare principal, Ms. Barbara Stephenson, and guidance counselor, Ms. Denise Young, coordinated the event with the belief that preventive education saves lives.
The following members of the Conway Volunteer Fire Department were on hand to answer questions and to share their experiences: Chief Joe Barrett, Bruce Davis, Dennis Joyner and Michael Woodard. Members from the Severn Volunteer Fire Department included Joshua Britt, Allen Burgress, Adam Coren, Ken Hyatt and Allen Taylor. |
“Buster” the School Bus Banks on Safety At Squire Elementary

Buster, the robotic school bus, was originally purchased about seven years ago in order to promote school bus safety to elementary school children around the state. Buster made a stop at Squire Elementary School recently. The talking bus captivated the students and they understood and enjoyed listening to his message of safety. The students gravitated towards the non-threatening eye level robot as their principal, Mrs. Ann D. Davis talked to it as if it was human. One of the highlights of the presentation was when Principal Davis and Buster led several students as they actually practiced boarding and existing the school bus safely
At the end of the presentation, Principal Davis and Buster recapped the entire safety lesson and reminded the students to always cross in front of the school bus, always look both ways before crossing the street using their eyes, ears and neck muscles, that the flashing yellow lights mean that cars should get ready to stop and finally not to cross the street until the red lights are flashing and the stop sign is out. Mr. James Tillery, Northampton County Schools Transportation Director, and Assistant Superintendent Phil Matthews were on hand for the training.

 Harlem Rockets Stress Education
Northampton Chamber Showcase Harlem Rockets for NCS Students and Staff
The Harlem Rockets, a team of talented, well-known, and well-trained players who excel in comedy basketball at its finest, recently performed for several Northampton County elementary schools. The performances were courtesy of the Northampton Chamber of Commerce. In addition to basketball skills, tricks and games, the players delivered a positive message about education, goal setting and avoiding the hazards of drugs and alcohol to the students. Students and teachers were invited to join in with the Rockets for several activities involving manual dexterity, patience, persistence and perseverance. Northampton County Chamber President, Marshall K. Cherry, was present at each of the shows to introduce the team to school officials and students.
