 STEM Students Visit Holocaust Museum
STEM students visit Holocaust Museum

On Tuesday, January 19, 2010, thirty-six freshman and sophomore students gave up their day off to travel to Washington, DC, for a visit to the Holocaust Museum.  All of the students had recently completed World History, in which they studied World War II, and/or Honors English II, in which they read Elie Wiesel’s Holocaust memoir Night.  The purpose of the field trip was to learn more about the causes and effects of the Holocaust.  While touring the museum and seeing historical objects from before, during, and after the Holocaust, student asked insightful questions and probed for deeper understanding of the topics they covered in class.  Many students were excited to realize how much they already knew from their studies, and many pointed out familiar quotations from Elie Wiesel painted on the walls of the museum.  Perhaps the most moving display was a gallery lined with shoes confiscated from victims as they entered the concentration camps.  Students were sobered to see such a stark representation of loss.  Several students drew comparisons between the Holocaust and more recent atrocities like the genocide in Rwanda and Jim Crow laws in America.  All left with a broader view of world events and a deepened understanding of the horrifying results of racism.
